Maps are updated
2010-01-12 в 09:37:32
Firstly Happy New Year to all of you! Wish you health and happiness!

My maps archive from trainings is updated. In the end of last year and in the beginning of this one I was on a training camp in Primorsko together with Elit2000 team. The weather, atmosphere and company were very nice! Thanks to the team leaders for the organization.

I had only two days at home after I went back home from the camp. Then I went to Sofiya on a camp from the Athletics Federation. My main worry now is to choose the best decision about recovering from the injury which is bothering me from the World Champs. I made some examinations including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Now I’m heading to the next treatment and I hope that this one is going to recover the injury fully.
You can see the maps from the camp and one more in the section Maps from trainings.
Top10 sportsmen awards of my city G.Oryahovitza
2009-12-17 в 23:12:50
Ivan Sirakov and the city mayorMarina Dimitrova and Ivan Sirakov

Today (17.12) the top10 sportsmen awards of my city Gorna Oryahovitza were held. Organizer of the ceremony was once again the Sports Association in the city – Lokomotiv and the honoured guests were the city mayor, the chairman of the city council and so on. The ceremony started with awarding 15 young talented sportsmen of all sports and after that the team of the year was awarded – our mens handball team which gained a top3 place in the country this season. Then the time had come – the top 10 sportsmen of the city were announced – I got a ninth place. There were represented several sports in the top10 – 3 Arm wrestling, 2 athletics, 2 wrestling, 2 sambo and 1 plane-rocket shaping?. I’m participating in the inquiry with my results only in athletics as I’m competing for a city club. I don’t know which results were representing me in the inquiry but I can mention most important. I god a silver in the National Cross Country Champs in J23, bronze in National Mountain Running Champs in Men and a participation in European Mountain Running Champs (59th place), Balkan Mountain Running Champs (7th place) and a Balkan Cross Country Champs (17th place). I can also mention my gold medal in National University Cross Country Champs and an unofficial 4th place in National 10000m Champs running the distance in 32:15. I’m happy that I’m in top10 of the city once again. Sportsman of the city became Plamen Donchev who achieved bronze medal in wrestling from the Deaf Olympics in Taipe. Greetings for him and all of the awarded sportsmen and I wish them much more successes during the following year!
New season, new clubs
2009-11-12 в 13:38:38
During the new season I will compete for new clubs – in orienteering and in athletics. My new club in Orienteering is one of the strongest in Bulgaria - Variant 5, Targovishte. In between I will have my first international orienteering club - the Norwegian Kongsberg OL. In athletics I will represent the new member of Bulgarian Athletics Federation – Brown Team, Veliko Tarnovo.

One of the most important things which I think that every orienteer who wants to become one of the world-elite is to train and compete in Scandinavia. Everyone will confirm that the way going to the top is passing through the Scandinavia. I have thought to go there for the last few years but finally I decided that 2010 is the year that I should go there.

In the middle of September an opportunity came on the internet – project of Kongsberg OL, Norway. They want to bring some foreign young promising orienteers in their club and make some connections between them and their youngsters. There could be an advantage for both sides. So I was one of the candidates about this project as I liked the place and the opportunities. In the end of October I was told that I`m one of the chosen guys. We will be two boys (SUI Severin Howald and me) and two girls (SUI Julia Gross and LAT Laura Vike).

Kongsberg OL

Kongsberg is a nice town surrounded with orienteering maps. The WOC`78 have been there. It is situated about 70kms south-west from Oslo and is about 2hours from Halden and 3hours from Kristiansand – in these both big orienteering centers there are Bulgarians. I think this opportunity as very good and I will try to use it best. With the experience gained there I will raise my technical level and it will be very useful for the future.

I was competing for SKO “Trapezitsa 1954” Veliko Tarnovo last 6 years and now it came time to change. I`m grateful for the support and our time together with the team. My new orienteering club in Bulgaria “Variant 5” Targovishte is one of the best in the country – there is a lot of work with children, it arranges several competitions as one of them is Velikden Cup (one of the biggest O-competition in Bulgaria) and not least there are very good orienteers running for it. Kiril Nikolov, the 6th man on the WOC Sprint this year competes for this team too.

Variant 5

In Athletics I was competing for a local team – “Locomotiv-26”. During the upcoming season I will represent one of the best teams in Bulgaria in Orienteering – “Brown Team”. Yes I said Orienteering but they are now going to be a member of our Athletics Federation so I will be part of the athletes in the team. This is one club which was growing and integrating very fast in the surrounding atmosphere of the sports. Their fresh and intelligent board handle the managing of the team very good. Personally I always had the happiness of receiving their support.

Still not training at all cause of the injury...
2009-11-04 в 12:43:20
It`s been a long time since my last post just after WOC. In fact somebody hacked my web so the last article about the world champs is missing as I didn`t have it on backup. So I will summarize the information about WOC in Hungary.

This years WOC was a disappointment for me. I didn`t manage to do my best in any distance and I even didn`t enjoy the orienteering. I made a lot of mistakes there and got an injury after the long qualification so the rest (sprint qual and relay) I ran under the influence of injections. All maps from the WOC-week are in the maps-section.

Balkan Champs, SprintPrize-giving ceremony in Balkan Champs Sprint

Since WOC I have made only very few jogging trainings and the injury is still bothering me. Now I`m trying to recover the muscle with homeopathy. We will see how much more time I will need. In fact during the period from WOC till now I participated in one competition – Balkan Orienteering Championships. I was decided not to take part in it as I had pain in my leg but just two days before the travelling to BOC I felt I could run. I didn`t want to miss second Balkan champs in a row as last autumn I had an injury too... So I went to Serbia where the champs were held and I ran sprint, relay and long. My main mistake was that I ran that Long distance. Before the championships I was pretty sure that I have to reject the long but after the sprint and relay races I was feeling OK. With the help of a guy who should ran this distance in stead of me I decided to run. Now I think this Long distance is the main reason that I`m still not recovered. By the way I got bronze in Sprint, behind Ionut Zinca and Kiril Nikolov and a gold in Relay together with Ivaylo Kamenarov and Kiril. It was an exciting fight on the last leg between the best Balkan orienteers – Ionut and Kiril. And a 5th place in Long. Maps from BOC are in the maps-section.

Failed at WOC Long Quilification
2009-08-18 в 10:45:49
Yesterday the 2nd qualification race of this years WOC was held – the Long distance. This is one of the distances which I`m running this year. In spite of everything I succeed in making too much mistakes (about 8:30) and be out of the final for the long distance. Results in my heat were quite tight as the 15th place was 3:22 down to the winner Graham Gristwood GB.

Today we are going to make a training on the model terrain for the sprint distance which is going to be held on Thursday (20.08) and I will try to do everything well this time.

Time before WOC - two training camps
2009-08-11 в 00:11:31
My training program (so as the national team) before the World Orienteering Champs were divided in two camps – first one on high altitude and second one on Shoumen orienteering terrains.

Firstly I made a two-week-long training camp (20.07-02.08) on high altitude (we slept around 1940m a.s.l.) – Belmeken, in Rila mountain. Me and Kiril Nikolov were the only one of the national orienteering team who went to that camp. He was there a week earlier but I joined him just after the National champs in middle and relay.

We was training the same most of the time but sometimes one of us listened to his feelings. I`m sure that the trainings there and mostly that we were together will bring us to a new level physically. The weather there was much pleasant as on the lower parts of the country it was hot.

During the first week I made 11 trainings and still I had one rest day – Sunday. 12x 100m hills, 10x 300m hills, fast 10k trail run and a hiking 4h20mins (20k in Pirin mountain), some jogging and once biking was the first easier week. I ran 112k, 12h 50mins.

During the second week I made 11 trainings again but this time I didn`t have a rest day. We switched one gear up and made some really good trainings. We had a fast uphill run (1.6k with 400m climb), where Kiril was almost 2mins faster!, 5x 1000m on stadium, fast 8k trail run, 5x 300m uphills and a 5k fartlek 50m/50m, hiking 2h30min and some jogging. I ran 110k, 10h 55mins.

For the whole camp (14days) I ran 222k, 23h 45mins (6:25min/km). After we went back to Sofia we made us a bloodtest so we can see our haemoglobin level. I never had a high one so 158 was OK for me. The next day we made an interesting training. We made a good warm-up and then we get into the national stadium, put spikes on and run as fast as possible 1000m. Both of us made a personal best – Kiril ran 2:38 but me 2:39. I`m pleased with the result as never thought I can run so fast.

On Thursday (06.08) early in the morning we went to Shoumen for the second camp which was mostly about our technical preparation and was on lower altitude. During the 4-days-camp (06-09.08) we made 7 trainings with map – I ran 3 sprint, 2 long and 2 relay trainings acording to the map scale. The nice time there and the work with map should affect positive on our performances in Hungary.

On Wednesday (12.08) most of our delegation for the WOC will travel by bus through Romania. The plan is to arrive in the evening in Miskolc. The program of WOC starts on Sunday 16.08 with the Middle qualification. My first start will be on Monday 17.08 on the Long qual. You can find out more information in the official WOC website where you can follow the champs online.
2nd in National Champs Middle
2009-07-24 в 20:19:47
Last weekend (17-19.07) Vasil Levski Cup and National Champs in Middle and Relay were held in Karlovo, Sopot and Kalofer respectively.

Vasil Levski Cup was held in the center of Karlovo and was a sprint distance. The start was at 16 o`clock and it was quite hot out there but still I had wish to run. The mens course was 2.5k with 11controls through the streets of the city. I ran well but made a wrong route-choice for the lst control which cost me 7secs. Kiril Nikolov took part in this competition too and started 2mins after me. He didn`t succeed in beating my time of 9:24 on the final – he was 3 seconds slower. Third time for the day made the norvegian Sigve Vogsnes 10:15.
MAP: Vasil Levski - sprint

On Saturday (18.07) in Sopot the National Champs in Middle distance was held. Finish area was just in the center of the city but the start was in the edge just to the real terrain. There was a closed start and everyone had to be in the area before 10:30h. It was tough as it was shining but there were people starting till 13:30h. The course mainly go through the forest just to the city which wasn`t very big but still with a lot of stones and other features it was interesting. The mens course was 5.2k with 24controls and I started at 12:48h, two minutes behind the favourite Kiril Nikolov. I took my race stable and with confidence. I made some small misses from 5 to 20secs each – altogether 1min – in the real part of the course BUT made a 30secs mistake on the home-going control. It was placed on a rock just on the path going down to the city but I was confused by the vegetation there and missed it. Some hundred meters after I was on the finish where I set a second-best time 32:09. The leader at the moment was Kiril Nikolov with 30:42. Nobody succeed in beating our times so we got the first two places. The 3rd place went to Nikolay Dimitrov with 32:27. I was happy with the result as in my first senior year I got gold and silver from the individual national champs respectively sprint and middle.
MAP: National champs Middle

On Sunday (19.07) in Kalofer the Relays were held. I ran the first leg in an empty relay for a training. The terrain was quite steep and the courses longer than on the previous day – 7-7.2km. I started well but made a miss for the 4th control – about 2mins, which totally ate my desire to push harder. I continued running and still made some small misses. I chose maybe the best route to the long leg for the spectator control but didn`t succeed in performing it. Hundred meters before the spectator control I step awry badly and fell down as it was downhill. I hurt my ankle and hand. After a minute more I was on the spectator control and decided not to continue with the course as there were 700-800m left. I was the 2nd guy going there as Petar Doganov was faster.
MAP: Natinal champs Relay

After the prize-giving and closing ceremonies together with Kiril Nikolov, his coach and two others boys we went to Belmeken where I was going to start the high-altitude training camp before WOC. Kiril had started it a week earlier. In fact it is just two of us who are representing the national orienteering team on that camp. The conditions here are nice and the weather isn`t as hot as in the lowest part. We are training hard some days and are having good time here as it is full of many other athletes from different sports.
European Mountain Running Championships
2009-07-20 в 15:58:24
The training camp around Panichishte ended on 10th of July and it was held during nice conditions. The accomodation, food and even the weather were nice. Of course there were sunny and rainy days but still I didn`t cancel any training because of the weather. I made some nice walks and cross-walking trainings in the nature of Rila mountain. I visited the 7 Rila lakes few times. I had very nice time during the camp and I got a lot of positive energy.

Early in the morning of 11th of July we went to Sofia airport where we got a flight to Munich where a bus was waiting for us. We had a 2 and a half hours of driving to city of Telfes where the European Championships in Mountain Running was going to be held. We were accomodated in the next village Fulpnes which was a km away. We had a busy program as on the same the it was the opening ceremony and so on. We had an easy jog but we didn`t saw what to expect the next day. We had a plenty of food on breakfast early on the next morning. The mens start was at 11 o`clock and our route was 11km long with 1300m climb. Just after the start we made a small lap into the village and then we was going right in the Alps. We run through roads, paths, small paths and sometimes on grass. There were some really steep parts of the route as it was in the end. Finally I was up on the final and took the 59th place in the 8th European Mountain Running Champs. Ahmet Arslan from Turkey came as a champion. The best bulgarian was Shaban Mustafa with 35th place, 6:23 behind the winner. I got 59th place some 4:47 behind Shaban and the third bulgarian Stanislav Lambev was 69th more 2:49 down. 80 runners finished the race in the toughest course of the day. There were more strong competitors than previous years.

The prize-giving and closing ceremonies were in the evening and they were followed by the pasta party. We had a lot of fun and went to Bulgarian on the next morning.

On Monday evening (13.07) I was already at home and started to rest active to be ready for the upcoming orienteering events in Karlovo, Sopot and Kalofer – Vasil Levski Cup, National Champs in Middle and Relay. Right after them I`m going to have a camp on Belmeken together with Kiril Nikolov preparing for the World Champs in Hungary.
8 Orienteering starts in 9 days on the Black sea coast
2009-07-06 в 14:50:51
After we went back from Hungary (from the selection races) I need a rest because I had some problems with the knee but after some medicial and ice care it was OK. I had a plan to participate in all of the competitions on the Black sea coast before the biggest competition here - Bulgaria Cup. I got part in Bulgarian Park Cup 2nd round in Bourgas, Strandzha Cup 2days, Begun Cup 2days and the most important Bulgaria Cup 3days.

BPC was held in the sea-garden in Bourgas on 13.06. The field wasn`t as high as possible as some elite competitors didn`t participated. The map and the course wasn`t well prepared and the organization was quite bad. A lot of people were disappointed but I got it as a training so it was still nice. I started carefully and in the middle of the course I catched most of the opponents. I made some small misses in the end but still I won the race.
BPC 2nd round

Begun – 1day

The next two days (14-15.06) near the village Yasna poliana was held the Stranja Cup. It was organized from the same club so I didn`t have big expectations. The maps were quite old but still very good. The courses were nice and were good opportunity to get some experience from our coast terrains. On the first stage I got catched 2mins from the main opponent but still in the end I was some seconds faster so the 2nd stage was going to be decisive. On the next day I was the one starting 2mins after him so it was an advantage for me. I got him early on 4th control and from there it was easy. I made 1 big miss on the 1st day and some small ones but on the 2nd day one of 2:30mins.
Strandzha Cup 1day
Strandzha Cup 2day

Begun – 2 day

On the 17 and 18 of June the Begun Cup was held on the terrain from the 1st day of Bulgaria Cup 2006 – Perla. The first stage was in forested area on 1:10000 map. I made stupid mistake of 3:30 for the 6th control and if we count the rest of the misses I made it a technically-awful race for me. Kiril Nikolov got the win today with about 4mins lead. I was 2nd but only 2secs in front of Vlado Atanasov. The second day was arranged on a 1:5000 map mainly on the sand dunes. It was quite interesting but I wasn`t concentrated again and made 4-5 misses of about 10-15secs. It was quite much so I didn`t hold my 2nd place from the 1st day. Kiril Nikolov was 2mins faster than the 2nd Vlado Atanasov who was 4secs in front of me. I got a 3rd place overall just 2secs behind Vlado.
Begun Cup 1day
Begun Cup 2day

Begun – prize giving

Finally it was time for the Bulgaria Cup. First two days were organized near to Ahtopol city but the 3rd one was close ot Primorsko city. The main focus first two days was to stay away from big misses as in such competitions it is very important because of a overall classment. I had the needed self-confidence and I thought I would make good races. I started the first day not as planned while making some misses here and there. The most notable are for 9th (2min) and 21st (3mins). With 7 lost minutes in the race I wasn`t satisfied even that just two Halden men beat me that day – 1. Kiril Nikolov 59:46, 2. Lacho Iliev 66:34 and I got 67:01. After that race I tried to analyze the mistakes and be prepared for the next day which was going to held on particularly same area.
Bulgaria Cup 1day

I started with clear head thinking that I would get away from the mistakes. But early on 2nd control I made a identical mistake as the previous day. I made some more mistakes – biggest for 10th and 25th. With altogether 10 lost minutes I was totally disappointed from my race. It was absolutely contrary to what I thought will do. My good physical shape influenced the results that day once again and I wasn`t quite far from the main group. I was 8:39 behind Kiril Nikolov (56:49) but the 2nd guy Zlatko Kamenarov was 3:39 ahead of me (61:49). I got the 9th place that day with 65:28.
Bulgaria Cup 2day

Bulgaria Cup – 3rd day – last control

On the last day of Bulgaria Cup (21.06) it was a chasing start with the time difference from the first two days. I was going in the forest as 6th runner some 30secs behind the 5th Nikolay Dimitrov, 36secs behind 4th Lacho Iliev and 1:01 from the 3rd Milko Sakarov. I was 2:30 down to the second spot. 2:42 behind me was starting Vlado Atanasov. The given information about the terrain said that it would be a fast race as the area is mostly flat with clear forest. I started as fast as possible trying to catch the guys in front of me. Finally in the middle of the 4th leg I saw Lacho but still nobody else. I got him till the 4th control but we ran together just hundred meters then I ran ahead. So on the 5th control I was alone. I was running with good speed and I saw Milko (the 4th starter) on the 8th control. I catched him on the 9th. I made a small round for the spectator control but still I was together with him there. Running for the 12th control I saw Zlatko so it was just Nikolay (without thinking for Kiril) who was in front even he started just 30secs before me. For the 13th control Zlatko was running further but in front of him I saw Nikolay so they both made a mistake there. I made a miss there too but it was a small one. So now me and Milko were running in 2nd and 3rd spot. I continued to run in good speed and on the 16th control I was all alone. I turned behind and saw nobody. I had some lead but never know how much. I tried to go ahead without misses and I knew it will be a happy end if I succeed. It was the 3rd last control where I wasn`t exactly sure for my direction as I saw some features and then I didn`t saw the 15th control (previously passed there) so I decided to make safety attack and went quite up on the gully. I knew my lead was enough for such situation – I lost 30secs. I finished the race with a smile, I knew that I got the 2nd place in the overall ranking for Bulgaria Cup in my senior debut year. It was a good end of the first two days with about 17mins of mistakes. I got second time for the day, 6secs down from Kiril Nikolov. There was very attractive final fight for the 3rd place in the overall standings between Nikolay and Zlatko. Finally the 3rd place went to Nikolay Dimitrov some centimeters ahead of Zlatko.
Bulgaria Cup 3day

During the 3days of Bulgaria Cup some decisions were made about WOC in Hungary. I`m happy that I will represent Bulgaria on the WOC Sprint and Long – these distances were in my plans. We talked about the preparation till the WOC but I will not take part in few weekend camps now. I will join the team after the National champs in Middle and Relay when we will go to a high altitude camp on Belmeken.
Towards the hotel in Panichishte

I`m now in Panichishte resort (1450m altitude) where the team for European Mountain Running Championships are preparing. We are leaving for Telfes, Austria on 10th of July and the competition is on 12th. The conditions here are really nice and I`m enjoying the time here.
7th on the Balkan Mountain Running Champs, Selections in Hungary
2009-06-11 в 11:56:10
The camp in Ribarica continued till 30th of May when the opening ceremony of 2nd Balkan Mountain Running Championships was held in the center of Teteven. On the next day a very tough race was expecting us – it was raining all the day. So the championships began on Sunday with the junior women followed by junior men, then the women and in the end – the men. The lap was about a minute longer than on the National Champs. In the team ranking the junior classes and women got 2nd places and the only medal and a champion title got Milka Mihaylova in women class, 8580m course (2laps).

There was it, the time for the toughest discipline, 12870m in men class. I was in good shape and thought I could do it quite good. Because of the rain the previous day, some slippery downhills, some falls from other athletes, I decided to run with spiked-shoes (with small ones) adidas Neptune. But in the end I analyzed this as my biggest mistake as my foots were sore. It was worth a little as it was dry mostly of the course and when running on asphalt I was struggling. I started my race in the middle of the group and tried not to be very fast as there were 3 laps left. In fact when I passed the first one 19:14 (1s slower than on the 1lap-race last week) I though it will be a hard one to finish. I definitely needed a slower 1st one. It started to be very hard in the uphills. I succeed in passing some guys and made a kind of regular 2nd and 3rd laps. I was walking the most of the uphills but passed the 2nd lap 21:23 and the 3rd in 21:49. In the end I got 7th place with time 62:27. The winner of the gold medal was Erkan Kuc Turkey with 56:33 followed by the orienteer Ionut Zinca from Romania with 57:29. 5th and 6th were the other Bulgarians – Shaban Mustafa 60:18 and Stanislav Lambev 61:50. We succeed in getting the second spot in team ranking once again this day. This competition was selection race for the European Mountain Running Champs in Telfes, Austria on 12th of July for the Bulgarian team. As I secured my third place from the Bulgarians I got the rights to participate in such a big event in Athletics as an European Champs.

Right after the competitions and the price giving ceremony I left for Gorna Oriahovitza missing the banquet and the closing ceremony of the Balkan Champs. I got time only to rearrange my luggage and then left to Hungary where the selection races for the Bulgarian team for WOC were going to be held. It was a long trip with the mini-bus and after such a race it wasn`t as nice as it could be with a fresh body. We went to the accommodation place in midnight so on the next day (02.06) we got an easy training with map. I fell down and hurt my knee badly in a stone.
MAP: Training

On the 03.06 was the first selection race – for Middle. I had no desire to run this discipline on WOC but still wanted to make a clear and stable run. BUT I didn`t. Once again, as on the previous middle test in Sevlievo, I made a mistake for the 1st control. Then I ran well before making the next mistakes for 7th, 8th and a biiig one for 10th, plus some more misses sent me to the bottom of the results. Best time today was made by Kiril Nikolov who didn`t participate in the official classment for the middle but he was 5min faster than the first guy. The team for middle on WOC is Petar Doganov, Ivaylo Petrov and Ivaylo Kamenarov.
MAP: Middle selection

On the next day (04.06) it was the second selection – for sprint distance which was prepared from Josef Polak and was held in Slovakia. This time I should have been with a much better adjustment to the race as this run was decisive if I wanted to run Sprint on WOC. I couldn`t say so when I finished. I made a bad race – mistake for 2nd control about 40secs, mistake for the 6th about 50secs and some more small misses grabbed me far from good run. Even I didn`t feel the tiredness from the Mountain running, the traveling and the starts, later on I think that I didn`t have the freshness in my running which I mostly have on sprint races. I wasn`t concentrated at all as my thoughts, exactly as the previous day, were in my knee which caused some problems. Best once again was Kiril Nikolov with 15:31. Second came Petar Doganov 17:24. The third place which is going to give a permission for participating in WOC Sprint wasn`t decided this day – Ivaylo Kamenarov and I had the same time - 17:28. Vladimir Atanasov got 17:32. The question mark that we made will be decided on the coming National Bulgaria Cup. Then the final decision about the WOC-teams will be made as all is unofficial now.
MAP: Sprint Selection

The last day (05.06) of the camp was a long selection. It was again in Slovakia by Josef Polak. The terrain is quite close to the real one for the WOC Long final. The course was 15.5k with 505m climb and 23 controls. It was raining the whole morning. This was the 2nd individual distance I would like to run on WOC. I tried to change my mood before the start in spite of the knee problem. I made three notable misses – for 2nd, for 12th and for 18th controls, about 1min each. Altogheter with the small ones I made about 4:30 misses. In fact it was a nice run on the background of the bad ones the previous days. The winner of the day was again Kiril Nikolov with 2 and some minutes faster than me. Ivaylo Kamenarov came 3rd on the same difference.
MAP: Long Selection

After the race we went back to Miskolc and visited the Bath-cave Tapolca. In the evening the most of the team left Hungary going back to Bulgaria.
